Lappeenranta is located in the border region of Russia, and on the southern shores of the fourth largest lake in Europe, Saimaa. Lappeenranta has approximately 73,000 inhabitants, that is more than half of the total population of the South Karelia region.
You can reach Lappeenranta within a 2-hour train ride from Helsinki. There are several daily connections between Helsinki and Lappeenranta. Russian destinations, such as St. Petersburg and Moscow are within easy reach from Lappeenranta. The train takes you from Lappeenranta to St. Petersburg, in 1.5 hours.

Imatra is located by Lake Saimaa and close to the Russian border. The Vuoksi river runs through the city of Imatra and has a population of 26,000 people.
